How are shutters measured and fitted?+
After your home visit we carry out a detailed technical survey, so every shutter is made to measure for your exact window. Fitting is carried out by our own team. Our help and advice page has more on choosing the right shutters.
What are plantation shutters?+
Plantation shutters are made-to-measure interior shutters with adjustable louvres. They sit inside your window recess or frame, so you can tilt the slats to control light, privacy and airflow, or fold the panels open completely. Browse our shutter styles.
What shutter styles do you offer?+
We offer seven styles: full height, tracked, shutter & shade, bay window, café style, tier on tier and special shaped. Not sure which suits you? Our guide to which style can help.
What is the difference between café style and tier on tier shutters?+
Café style shutters cover only the bottom half of the window, leaving the top open to daylight. Tier on tier shutters cover the whole window in two independent sections, so you can open or close the upper and lower tiers separately.
Do shutters help with light control and privacy?+
Yes, and that’s one of the main reasons people choose shutters over blinds or curtains. Adjustable louvres let you angle the light exactly as you like, room by room. Tier on tier and café style shutters let you keep the top of the window open for daylight while the bottom stays private.
Can shutters make a room dark enough for sleeping?+
Standard shutters give you excellent control over light, but for the darkest rooms we recommend Shutter & Shade. It combines a stylish shutter with an integrated room darkening blind, ideal for bedrooms, nurseries and home cinemas.
Are shutters safe for children’s bedrooms?+

Almost any. Every set is made to measure, whether your windows are standard, sash, bay or an unusual shape. Our Bass Wood and Samoa ranges are particularly suited to bay windows and special shaped openings.

Can I get shutters for patio doors or wardrobes?+
Yes. Our tracked shutters run on bi-fold or by-pass track systems, so they’re ideal for patio and conservatory doors, wide windows, built-in wardrobes and room dividers.
What are your shutters made from?+
Our seven material ranges run from entry-level MDF (Antigua and Bermuda) through hardwood (Cuba, Bass Wood and Samoa), with water-resistant ABS (Java) for wet rooms and intruder-resistant aluminium (Portchester) for security. See all our shutter materials.
What is the difference between MDF and hardwood shutters?+
MDF shutters are hardwearing, easy to clean and our most affordable option. Hardwood shutters are lighter, which suits larger windows and more complex shapes, and they can be stained to show the natural grain. Read our full comparison of hardwood and MDF shutters.
Are shutters suitable for bathrooms and kitchens?+
Yes. Our Java range is made from fully waterproof ABS, so it doesn’t absorb moisture and is easy to dry. It’s designed for bathrooms, kitchens, wet rooms and other rooms with steam or condensation. Our MDF-framed ranges aren’t suited to high-condensation rooms.
What colours can I choose for my shutters?+
White is the most popular, but we offer 23 paint colours, 27 wood stains on our premium hardwood ranges, and a custom colour match. Just supply a sample or colour code and we’ll do the rest. See all colours and finishes, or our guide to custom colour shutters.
Are your shutters made from sustainable materials?+
Our hardwood ranges are made from sustainably and responsibly sourced timber. Bass Wood is crafted from sustainable hardwoods, and Samoa uses timber from a plantation in the Solomon Islands that complies with the European Timber Regulations (EUTR).
Do you offer security shutters?+
Yes. Our Portchester range is made from intruder-resistant aluminium with a patented Italian locking mechanism, and suits indoor or outdoor use. It comes with a 5-year manufacturer warranty (3 years for external shutters).
How do I clean my shutters?+
Our shutters are quick and easy to keep clean. A regular wipe over the louvres and frame is usually all that’s needed, and painted finishes are protected with several coats and a UV protective layer. See our colours and finishes for more on how they’re finished.
